About

Shiga Kogen, located in Nagano's Joshinetsu National Park, was one of the sites of the 1998 Winter Olympics. It is the ski resort with the highest elevation in Japan, as well as the largest interconnected ski area, and it has some of the best powder snow in Japan. There are many activities other than skiing. Snowshoeing is a great way to slow down and walk through pristine natural forests. If you are tired from skiing every day or you are not a skier, this is a great way to go outside and experience the snowy natural setting.

Itinerary

We meet at Yudanaka Station where we take the bus to Shiga Kogen's Yokoteyama ski area, a 45-minute to 1-hour drive. From here, we take three lifts to the top of Yokoteyama ski area and the highest elevation ski area in Japan. At the top, we stop to catch the view at Tenma Terrace and have a hot beverage around a fire at High Mountain Coffee. From there, we descend to Shibu Toge ski area and then to the highest point on Japan's national highway system. We return to Yokoteyama ski area via an unplowed road and then walk through a beautiful forest to return to the lift.
