About

Shiga Kogen, located in Nagano's Joshinetsu National Park, is known primarily as a Winter destination. Indeed, with some of the best powder snow in Japan and Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park nearby, it's easy to see why. However, Shiga Kogen is a great summer destination as well. Escape the heat at over 2,000 meters and take in the rugged mountainous scenery. Hiking to Akaishiyama and Lake Onuma will be an unforgettable experience in nature.

Itinerary

We meet at Yudanaka Station where we take the bus to Shiga Kogen's Onuma Ike Iriguchi Bus Station, a 45 minute drive. From here, we ascend the gently sloping gravel road 4 kilometers leading to Lake Onuma. We take some time to walk around, have a snack and say a prayer at the iconic Shinto Torii Gate on the lake's edge. From here, it's another 2 kilometers (1.5 hours) up the trail to Mt. Akaishi. On a clear day, we have stunning vistas of the Northern Alps and can even occasionally see Mt. Fuji. We also see Lake Onuma below. We have our packed lunch here and return to the bus station that takes us back to Yudanaka.
