Bio

Tetsuo was born in Oita Prefecture in 1972. In his 20s, he began his career as a wild dolphin swim instructor and guide on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. He discovered the joy of surfing, camping, and outdoor activities, and subsequently worked as a diving guide and PADI Dive Master in Baja California, Mexico, seeking the sea and mountains while traveling the world. Since 2015, he has been involved in guiding long trails and low mountain tours primarily in the Kunisaki Peninsula of Oita Prefecture, as well as various locations throughout Japan. In 2020, he renovated an old Japanese farmhouse in Kita-Ku, Oita City, and operates it as a guesthouse called "Nada Midori-so" and "Nada Beach House." His motto is "experiences with a story," and he mainly offers guided services for long trails and SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboarding) lessons to inbound guests. Although he can guide in various locations in Japan, his main field is the Kunisaki Peninsula. He hopes to assist in the rediscovery of oneself through nature experiences. Through tourism, he aims to preserve the culture and local customs that continue to exist in each area.

Message

In the land of the Kunisaki Peninsula, where the fusion of Shinto and Buddhism is deeply rooted, I offer guided tours ranging from beginner to advanced levels along the scenic Minemichi Long Trail. Taking into account the local culture and history, I provide guidance to both domestic and international guests. Additionally, I can arrange Sunrise Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) experiences on the coastline near Nada Midori-so, our operating base. From the mountains to the sea, you can customize your journey to fully enjoy nature on the Kunisaki Peninsula. Furthermore, I am also available to guide guests in various locations throughout Japan, depending on the requests of inbound visitors. Please feel free to contact me for more information.

Guide Q&A

Q: What is your most memorable experience in nature?

While surfing in California, I had an incredible experience of catching the same wave as dolphins. It made me realize that I was entering their world, becoming aware of the fact that I am just a small part of the natural realm. It taught me that I am always just a tiny presence within the vastness of the natural world.

Q: What does nature represent to you?

Nature is something that is essential to living.

Q: What has nature taught you?

To be humble. Recognizing that one is not everything and acknowledging that one is being sustained.

Q: What do you hope that people will get out of experiences with you as a guide?

I hope that the experiences we provide become an opportunity for individuals to reflect on themselves.
