A True Ascent
Retrace the historic Yoshida Trail from the mountain's foot. While most tourists skip the forest by taking a bus to the 5th Station, you begin at the traditional entrance to experience the mountain’s full ecology and gradual transformation.
Living Heritage and Sacred Access
Stay at a 500-year-old traditional Oshi lodge run by the 19th generation of the same family. Through our local guides, you gain exclusive access to a sacred lava cave symbolic of rebirth that is normally closed to the public.
A Source of Artistic Inspiration
Mount Fuji is a UNESCO site for its role as a Source of Artistic Inspiration. By viewing the peak from a distance after your hike, you can view the mountain with the same perspective as the poets and woodblock artists that have been inspired by Fuji.

About

The Sacred Ascent is a meditative experience designed to rediscover Mount Fuji as a sacred space rather than a summit on a checklist. By retracing the steps of Edo-period pilgrims along the historic Yoshida Trail, you connect with the mountain's spirit through your hike and visits to the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine and exclusive access to sacred Fujiko sites.

This journey explores the legacy of the Fujiko faith, emphasizing that the true grandeur of Fuji is found in its heritage, its ancient forests, and its enduring role as a source of artistic inspiration. Along the way, you will learn the history of the Fujiko faith, a unique blend of Shintoism, Buddhism, and Shugendo mountain asceticism, and learn about how this path was once a profound spiritual undertaking. This is the serene, living spirit of Mount Fuji that most travelers never see.

  • Mount Fuji & The Five Lakes, Yamanashi
Mount Fuji, Japan’s iconic peak, is a cultural and spiritual pillar as much as it is a geographical landmark. The surrounding Five Lakes region offers a diverse ecosystem ranging from the dense, primeval forests to the reflective waters of Lake Kawaguchi.

The historic Yoshida Trail, starting from the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, serves as the primary artery for those seeking a quieter, more traditional experience. This region is a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized not just for its natural beauty, but as a "Source of Artistic Inspiration," having shaped Japanese aesthetics for centuries through poetry, woodblock prints, and religious practice.

    Itinerary

Day 1: The Path of Rebirth
Begin at the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, the original starting point for Fujiko pilgrims, for a ritual safety prayer. Gain exclusive access to a sacred lava cave and learn about the region's spiritual history and how hikes up Mount Fuji first became popular. Check into a traditional 500-year-old Oshi lodge to prepare your own pilgrim vestments and join a private prayer at the private family altar before enjoying a homemade dinner.
Day 2: The Ascent of the Yoshida Trail
Start your ascent from the mountain base at 8:00 AM, receiving traditional brands for your walking staff. Hike through old-growth forests and past abandoned stations where guides lead traditional prayer chants. Upon reaching the 2,000-meter mark at the 5th station, you will take a private transfer to Gora Kadan Fuji for a multi-course kaiseki dinner inspired by the mountain’s ecology.
Day 3: Reflection from the Peak’s Shadow
Focus on the artistic significance of the peak from the comfort of Gora Kadan Fuji. Viewing Fuji from a distance provides the perspective that inspired centuries of Japanese art and philosophy. Optional afternoon activities include a visit to the Cycl panoramic sauna or light hikes along the lakeside trails.
    Day 4: Departure
Enjoy a final breakfast with views of the mountain before a private transfer to Gotemba or Mishima Station for your onward journey to Tokyo or Kyoto.
Optional Climbing Season Extension (July – September Only)
During the official climbing season, we can arrange for a well-paced hike to the top of the mountain. A mindful night climb after dinner and sleep at a mountain hut offers clear views of the stars, leading to a peaceful sunrise between the 8th and 9th stations. Reach the summit after the morning rush for a quiet moment of reflection and hike around the crater before descending.

    Accommodations

Accommodation is split between a living heritage site and a luxury retreat to reflect the mountain’s spiritual and physical dimensions.

Traditional Oshi Lodge For the first night, you will stay at a 500-year-old traditional pilgrim lodge run by the same family for 19 generations. This provides a quiet, authentic space for reflection amidst living history and private altars, allowing you to inhabit the same space as pilgrims from the Edo period.

Gora Kadan Fuji The final two nights are spent at a luxury retreat offering private hot springs and unobstructed views that frame the peak as a work of art. This allows for a seamless transition from the physical effort of the climb to a state of quiet appreciation, with high-end Kaiseki dining and world-class comfort.
